Meet Crystal
Crystal's journey with Holy Redeemer Catholic School spans her foundational years, where she attended from grades one through eight, ultimately graduating in 2016. Her time there was marked by meaningful connections and experiences that helped shape her future path.
One staff member who left a lasting impression was Ms. Ilov. Crystal deeply admires Ms. Ilov's unparalleled passion for helping young people succeed, and credits her as an inspiration to always pursue work in areas one is truly passionate about.
Life at Redeemer: Importance of Community

Among her most cherished memories are the unique "Olympics" sport events that Ms. Saunders organized. Crystal remembers these events as a fun and engaging way for the entire community to come together and learn about the Olympic spirit.
Beyond specific events, the sense of community at Holy Redeemer stands out.
Growing up alongside peers from similar backgrounds was a beautiful experience, but Crystal also valued the school's open embrace of everyone, which fostered a truly welcoming environment.
Journey Beyond: Education and Career Goals

After graduating from Holy Redeemer, Crystal went to Detroit Cristo Rey High school and went on to pursue higher education. She attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, where she earned a degree in Women and Gender Studies with a minor in sociology in medicine and health. Today, she is actively pursuing prerequisite courses and plans to attend PA school, with the ultimate goal of becoming an OBGYN Physician Assistant.
Crystal attests that the foundation she received at Holy Redeemer prepared her for these next steps by instilling a strong sense of perseverance. She fondly recalls the attentiveness of her teachers and the intimate class sizes that ensured every student received necessary support. This early experience taught her the importance of having a strong support system throughout life's challenges.
Full Circle: Advice and Lasting Values

Crystal remains connected to her former classmates and values her status as an alumna of Holy Redeemer. Being part of this community means upholding the values and spirituality instilled during her years there, maintaining a lifelong connection to both the school and the Southwest Detroit community.
When asked what advice she would give to current students or her younger self, Crystal emphasizes the importance of compassion and the importance of having a growth mindset: "Everything happens for a reason. Don't be so hard on yourself. Mistakes happen, life is not perfect. You live and you learn from those mistakes." She encourages others to learn and grow from their mistakes rather than dwelling on them.
We are very thankful to have had the chance to hear Crystal's story and look forward to seeing her come visit the school soon!
