This past spring, the Holy Redeemer Community -- students, parents, teachers, and benefactors -- came together to create the Holy Redeemer Community Garden and Outdoor Classroom.
The garden features over 100 square feet of raised beds for herbs and vegetables, five raised beds of native pollinators, two apple trees, an Eastern Redbud, a bird bath, and a variety of hydrangeas, roses, and other beautiful plants.
The outdoor classroom features four picnic tables and four benches as well as kneeling pads so that students can use the space for various learning activities.
This would not have been possible without the help of our students and families. Students who were part of the EcoSchool team stayed after school for many days to build raised beds, prepare soil, plant seedlings, and assemble picnic tables. Additionally, parents and families of Holy Redeemer came together on a Saturday morning to weed, lay mulch, plant native pollinators, and assemble benches. The dedication of our students and families is reflected in this garden.
In addition to the hard work from students and families, this project also happened thanks to the support of one particular community sponsor and a local business.
E&M LandscapeServices, owned by a Holy Redeemer parent, dedicated their time to laying the hardscaping that forms the perimeter of the front courtyard and planting beautiful hydrangea bushes.
Ideal Group, a longstanding supporter of SouthWest Detroit, sponsored this project with their NextLevel grant, ensuring that we can continue to improve our school grounds and provide high quality experiences for our students.
We are grateful for everyone who supported the creation of the Holy Redeemer Community Garden and Outdoor Classroom. The strength of our school community shines through in this new space.
